The Mermaid Inn

People come from all over the world to stay at The Mermaid Inn in Rye, and the lobby is full of autographed portraits of famous celebrities. Situated on Rye’s famous Mermaid Street, the Inn was founded in the 11th century and was the headquarters of the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang during the 1730s and 1740s.

The Mermaid Inn has had a very long and turbulent history. As it sits today, the Inn was rebuilt in 1420 and is reported to be one of the most haunted buildings in all of England. It was a treat to stay in such an historic place but I never did experience any visitations from the other side during my stay.
