Day 5: Thursday, February 21

Homeward Bound

I got up at 3:30 a.m. to get ready for the Lorrie’s Shuttle bus to the airport ($14.00), which was arriving at 4:20 a.m. My flight out of San Francisco was departing at 6:45 a.m.

I checked out of the Grant Hotel (same nasty old Asian clerk at front desk again – obviously the night clerk) and waited outside the hotel on Bush Street for the airport shuttle bus. I had to return to the hotel to call Lorrie’s Shuttle as the bus was not arriving at the scheduled time. I spoke with the company’s dispatcher who said that the van was arriving 15 minutes late because the driver had mistakenly gone to the Grant Plaza, not the Grant Hotel. The shuttle finally arrived (with 3 other travelers inside) and we arrived at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) without incident.

I got checked in and passed through security with no problem. I found a restaurant and had a GROSSLY overpriced breakfast sandwich (gotta love those inflated airport prices!). My flight was on time (American Airlines #1324) and we took off from SFO at 6:45 (PST) <sigh>.

I arrived in Chicago at about 12:30 p.m. (CST), and had time to have lunch in the airport’s restaurant (it was the fastest service I’ve ever had in my life!). I boarded American Airlines (Eagle) #4111 to Toronto at 2:20 p.m. (CST), and the flight left on time. It was a rough flight but we got into Toronto OK at about 5:00 p.m. (EST).

I caught the Airport Express bus at Pearson to the Chelsea Hotel on Gerrard Street. In true Toronto fashion, the traffic was incredibly bad downtown. The bus was hardly moving as there was a big hockey game happening at the Air Canada Centre, hence the traffic snarls. Instead of getting off at the Chelsea Hotel stop, I jumped ship at the Royal York Hotel instead, taking a cab home from there. I arrived home safe and sound at about 7:00 p.m. (EST).

It had been an awesome trip – short, yes, but oh so sweet.
