Day 4: Wednesday, November 18

A Wet Day

I slept late this morning, still a little tired from the somewhat late night last night. I just caught the Euro Hotel’s last breakfast serving of the morning, just before 9:00 a.m.

The weather is wet today, but not steady rain.

After another very satisfying breakfast at the Euro, I took the Underground to Charing Cross station and went to Trafalgar Square:

Just behind the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square is the National Portrait Gallery. Loving portraiture and pop music equally, I was very interested to tour the Beatles To Bowie: The 60s Exposed photography exhibit… fantastic!:

Over the course of a few hours I toured all the floors of the National Portrait Gallery, thoroughly enjoying each. On my way out of the building I stopped into the requisite Gallery gift shop and bought a CD for Vince (Music for the Six Wives of Henry VIII).

Leaving the world of portraiture behind me, I walked down Whitehall Road, past 10 Downing Street and the Household Cavalry Museum, to King Charles Street:

There, I visited the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum. This was a fascinating place to visit which provided a sense of what people in this bunker experienced during World War II:

Leaving after a couple of hours, I got on the Westminster Underground to go back to the Euro Hotel and get some dinner. There was, however, a big delay with the Underground resulting in huge crowds, etc., so I got off at the Piccadilly Circus stop. It was only about 5:30 but darkness had fallen:

I took a few shots then sought out some food. I finally found a Subway and had something to eat (it had been a long time since breakfast!).

After eating I wanted to buy some CDs at the Virgin Megastore in Piccadilly Circus but as I found out, it was gone (as in, out of business!), so I found an HMV on the Trocadero and got Freemasons Shakedown 2 and the latest discs from Chicane and Al-pha-X.

I was starting to feel the length of the day, so I hopped the Underground from Piccadilly Circus to Russell Square. Returning to the Euro Hotel at about 7:00 p.m., I rested for the remainder of the evening and caught up on my journal.

Off to bed early.
